Beach make over (Before & After)

The private access to the beach has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 15 years. It was initially a winding overgrown path, with risks of tumbling down the bank where you’ll be greeted by the beach covered in entanglement of weeds and the notorious ‘old man’s beard’.

One big storm eroded the path beyond repair which led us to the start of the development of the private beach access which turned out to be one of the favorite amenities at Toka Ridge. Thanks to Ian’s initiative to instigate change.

The transformation began with major earthworks to stabilize the collapsed bank, creating terraces and strategically planting native species. Earth Movers, the forestry contractors played a crucial role in converting the windy path into a safe single-lane track.

Years after Toka Ridge was built, Rob, our meticulous groundskeeper, worked on further developing this area into a scenic walkway garden that matches the standard of Toka Ridge gardens.

Real work on the beach began once it was possible to drive a vehicle down the path; dead pungas were chopped, weeds and vines were removed, and driftwoods were collected which we burned for a nightly beach bonfire under the stars- it served as our awesome reward at the end of each day’s hard work on the beach.

As progress continued, we decided that we needed a discreet path for Toka Ridge guests to access the beach. With the help of Sam Dennis from EDNZ (Earth Development New Zealand), we cleared the topsoil and laid down a driveway of stone chips joining the beach path to the main driveway.

We later installed our latest additions which are the beach cabana with help of Scott and Zac from Runciman and Murray, and the picnic table by the beach.

Since promoting the private beach access, it has become a favorite spot for our guests to unwind, take short walks, and enjoy moments of silence. Rob’s regular maintenance ensures the area remains pristine for all to enjoy.

Countless events, from beach parties to proposals, have left lasting memories at the beach. The team’s commitment to continuous improvement ensures that it will remain a cherished spot for years to come, with the hope of hosting weddings and more unforgettable moments in the future.
